Forum/Soil diary task: How do you connect with soil?

Choose option 1 or 2 and post a short text, photo, or instruction in the forum. Also take a look at what your fellow participants have posted. You may also note your findings in your Soil diary.  Option 1 - Growing food: Have you ever grown food yourself, e.g. in a windowsill pot, balcony, or a community garden? Which plant(s) did you grow? Which soil did you use? What went well or poorly (watering, nutrients, pests)? What would you do differently next time?  Option 2 - Object life cycle: Choose a favourite item in your room. What materials is it made from? Trace those materials to their origins. Where does soil enter the story (plant-based fibres, timber, mined minerals, packaging)?     Click here to share in the forum.

Option 1 - Growing food: Have you ever grown food yourself?

Yes, I have! My dad's side of family historically have been growing their own food because they live in the southern region. As a child I participated a lot in their gardening and field work. Forum/Soil diary task: How do you connect with soil?

Take a photo of where you get in contact with soil in your daily life – this can be at home, on your way to the university, to work or during a walk outside. Share the photo in the forum or put it in your Soil diary. Here are some examples for inspiration: Slide 1: © Soil on potatoes by Benjamin Draxler  Slide 2: © Muddy shoes by Sabine Huber, BOKU University  Slide 3: © Dust on car window by Linnaea Mallette, CC0   Slide 4: © Pot plant by Sabine Huber, BOKU University  Slide 5: © Making pottery by John, CC-BY-NC-SA 2.0, no changes were made to the original photo  Slide 6: © Community garden by King County Parks Your Big Backyard, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0, no changes were made to the original photo    Take also the opportunity to introduce yourself and get to know your fellow learners!  Where do you come from? How do you get in contact with soil? What is soil to you? What is your motivation to take this course? Click here to share in the forum

The link is not working for me either, I would have shared a picture of the pitch black soil that resulted from an anaerobic fermentation composting method called bokashi.

What is your connection with soil?

We’ve asked a similar question – What is your connection with soil? – in a Bachelor Soil Geography class at Wageningen University. This is what your fellow students had in mind:  Compare the words in the image with your own notes. Did you have similar thoughts? Which of these words feels most new or interesting to you, and why?
