Think about the term “soil” and related ones in your native language. Can you think of figures of speech or proverbs that include soil or related terms? Post some in your native language including an explanation in English!
For example, in English:
“Being grounded”, “Mother Earth”, “being rooted in something”, “you reap what you sow”
For example, in German/English translation:
“Auf fruchtbaren Boden fallen.” = Something (like an idea or suggestion) lands on soil that is ready to grow, i.e. ideas or plans find an audience that is open and receptive.
“Auf dem Boden der Tatsachen bleiben.” = To stay grounded in reality or on the ground of facts, not get carried away by dreams, emotions, or exaggerations.
“Den Boden unter den Füßen verlieren.” = Losing the ground under your feet, when you feel disoriented or overwhelmed due to a crisis or shock.
“Etwas aus dem Boden stampfen.“ = To stamp something out of the ground or build something from scratch very quickly.
For example, in Frensch/English translation:
“Etre cloué au sol” = about a person or an object that cannot move.
“Être à terre” = either be on the ground after a fall or be bereft, ruined, broken.
“Avoir/Garder les pieds sur terre” = expression used to describe a person that is realistic, reasonable.
